Keyhole Sink is a small canyon near Williams, AZ, less than a mile off the old road in the Kaibab National Forest. Its outline looks like an old-fashioned keyhole, and its rock walls carry petroglyphs left by the Cohonina, an ancient people of the region, some 1,000 years ago. It is a quiet nature detour for Route 66 drivers who want to see something far older than the highway.
What is Keyhole Sink?
The canyon is known for two things: rock art pecked into its walls by the Cohonina about a millennium ago, and waterfalls that pour into the canyon only in certain seasons.
Visiting Keyhole Sink: tips
The site is not set up for wheelchairs, so expect uneven ground. Because the falls are seasonal, the canyon may be dry when you arrive. Look at the petroglyphs without touching them. The Arizona State Railroad Museum and the Poozeum are both under 10 miles away, back toward Williams.
