Bill Williams Mountain is a volcanic peak in the Kaibab National Forest near Williams, AZ, about 2.5 miles off the old road. It rises about 3.5 miles south of town and roughly 31 miles west of Flagstaff. The mountain, like the town, carries the name of Old Bill Williams, a scout and guide of the 1800s, which makes it part of the local Route 66 story.
What is Bill Williams Mountain?
The peak is a lava dome, a kind of volcano formed by thick lava piling up around its vent. It belongs to the San Francisco volcanic field, the same volcanic region that stretches toward Flagstaff.
Visiting Bill Williams Mountain: tips
For most Route 66 drivers this is a scenery stop rather than a destination: the mountain is the backdrop to Williams. Camp Clover Ranger Station is about 2.7 miles away, and Urban Route 66 in Williams is about 3.5 miles off, so the peak fits easily into a morning in town.
