St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and Rectory

This Joplin church complex, dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, pairs two stone buildings in Joplin, MO, about a mile off the old road. The church dates from 1906 and follows the Late Gothic Revival style; the rectory beside it came in 1917 in the Prairie School manner. Both are built of Carthage limestone, which ties two very different designs together and makes the complex a handsome detour from downtown.

What it is

The church is a large stone building, about 63 by 122 feet, with a triple entrance at the front, pointed Gothic arches over its windows and doors, round windows and decorative tracery. The rectory is a two-story house with a low hipped roof and deep overhanging eaves, set over a finished basement. A concrete block garage on the grounds also counts as part of the historic property.

A bit of history

The church was completed in 1906 and the rectory eleven years later, in 1917. In 1991 the property was added to the National Register as a small historic district, recognizing the church, the rectory and the garage together.

Visiting tips

Plan to admire the stonework from the street, and be respectful if a service is under way. Fifteen minutes is enough. The Bonnie & Clyde Garage Apartment is about a mile away, and the Main and Eighth Streets Historic District is about 1.1 miles off. Gringos, about 0.3 mile away, is the closest food.
