Phillips Mansion

The Phillips Mansion in Pomona, CA, is a house in the Second Empire style. Louis Phillips built it in 1875, and by the 1890s he was the richest man in the county. It stood on the Butterfield Stage route and served as a gathering place for the Pomona and Spadra communities. Listed on the National Register in 1974, it sits about 5 miles off the old road and offers a look at Southern California long before the automobile.

What is Phillips Mansion?

The mansion is a Second Empire design, the formal style Phillips chose for his home in the 1870s. It is also recognized as a California Point of Historical Interest. Its place on the old Butterfield Stage route made it more than a private residence: it became a center of community life for Pomona and neighboring Spadra.

History of Phillips Mansion

Louis Phillips built the house in 1875, and within about two decades he had become the wealthiest person in Los Angeles County. In 1974 the mansion joined the National Register, one of the county's first 25 listings; today the county has more than 450.

Visiting Phillips Mansion: tips

Visiting arrangements are not listed, so treat the mansion as a view-from-outside stop and respect the property. A short look is enough. Elephant Hill, the northern tip of the Puente Hills, is only about 0.3 miles away, and Raging Waters is about 1.8 miles off. The 1909 Pomona City Stables are roughly 2 miles away and make a good second historic stop.
