Red Rock Canyon State Park

Red Rock Canyon, now called Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park, is a sheltered canyon park just south of Hinton, OK, about 5 miles off the old road. Long before Route 66, Plains Indians wintered here and California Road settlers stopped for water and wagon repairs; their wheel ruts can still be seen. Today it offers trails, rappelling, fishing, a pool and campsites set right inside the canyon.

What is Red Rock Canyon State Park?

The park fills a Caddo County canyon about a mile south of Hinton. Its protected setting shelters the only remaining stand of native Caddo maple trees, and in autumn the park and the country around it are known for good fall color.

Visitors can rappel down the canyon walls, walk nature trails, tackle a rocky hiking trail or fish. Facilities include picnic areas, group shelters and a playground, plus a swimming pool with a bathhouse and tent and RV sites on the canyon floor. The park is listed as wheelchair accessible.

History of Red Rock Canyon State Park

Before Oklahoma was settled, Plains Indians used the canyon as a winter camp. Later, settlers on the California Road made it a regular halt, refilling their water and fixing their wagons before pushing west. The ruts cut by their wheels can still be traced in the park today. The site was long known as Red Rock Canyon State Park before taking its current name.

Visiting Red Rock Canyon State Park: tips

The park is about 5 miles off the old road, so it suits a lunch break, an afternoon walk or an overnight stay. Watch the ground on the trails: rattlesnakes are known here, and copperheads have been reported, though they are uncommon. Sturdy shoes help on the rocky trail.

Rock Mary, another California Road landmark, is about 4 miles away. Bridgeport Hill Service Station is about 8 miles away, and Provine Service Station is about 15 miles away.
