Bridgeport Hill Service Station

The Bridgeport Hill Service Station near Geary, OK, is a small group of three buildings put up to serve drivers on the newly built Route 66: a gas station, a repair garage and a well house. The Tilley family ran it until the interstate bypassed the area, and the builder even marked his deep water well with an engraved slab. It sits less than a mile off the main route line.

What is Bridgeport Hill Service Station?

Each of the three buildings has its own character. The gas station is wooden, with a sloping metal roof and a canopy over the pump area. The repair garage is built of metal and rests on a concrete slab; it has windows and one overhead door. The well house, windowless and roofed in metal, is made of concrete block.

It shelters a water well sunk 77 feet deep. Leroy Tilley, who built the station, was proud enough of it to set a carved concrete slab out front recording the well's depth and the day it was finished.

History of Bridgeport Hill Service Station

The station was a private venture, built to catch business from the brand-new U.S. highway through the area. Joseph Tilley owned it, and at his death it passed to his brother Leroy. The family kept it going into the years after 1962, when Interstate 40 bypassed Bridgeport.

Leroy's widow still lived there as late as 1987. In 2003 the group of buildings joined the National Register as an example of a small business that grew up to serve Route 66 travelers.

Visiting Bridgeport Hill Service Station: tips

The station is less than a mile off the main route line on an old stretch of the highway, so allow a short detour and 10 to 15 minutes. Look for the engraved slab by the well house. View the buildings from outside.

Red Rock Canyon State Park is about 8 miles away and makes a good place to stretch your legs, and Rock Mary, a California Road landmark, is about 10.5 miles away.
