The Provine Service Station, better known as Lucille's Place, is a small Craftsman bungalow gas station on Route 66 near Hydro, OK. Lucille Hamons ran it from 1941 until her death in 2000, and her kindness to struggling travelers made her a road legend known as the Mother of the Mother Road. Listed on the National Register, it is one of the most personal stops on the Oklahoma stretch.
What is Provine Service Station?
The station dates from 1929 and follows the American Craftsman bungalow style, a homey look that many early stations used to blend into the landscape. It stands half a mile south of Hydro, right on the old highway.
Over the years it went by several names: Hamons Court, Hamons' Service Station, and above all Lucille's Place, after the woman who kept it running for nearly six decades.
History of Provine Service Station
Lucille Hamons took charge of the station in 1941, as the hard years of the Great Depression were ending and many motorists on Route 66 had little money. Her willingness to help travelers who were down on their luck earned her lasting fame along the road, where she came to be called the Mother of the Mother Road.
She stayed at the station until she died on August 18, 2000. The property had already joined the National Register in 1997, recognized as a surviving piece of Route 66 roadside history in Oklahoma.
