Urban Route 66, Williams, Arizona

Urban Route 66 in Williams, AZ, is the stretch of the old highway through the middle of town, and it is on the National Register. Unlike many towns, Williams kept most of its roadside buildings from the highway years, so motels, service stations and restaurants from the 1920s through the 1940s still line the road. Williams was also the last Route 66 town bypassed by Interstate 40, in 1984.

What is Urban Route 66, Williams?

The listing covers Route 66 as it runs through Williams, from the four-block historic business district in the middle to the commercial strips on either side. One block of motels, gas stations and cafes stands west of downtown, and four blocks stand to the east. Their locations and building dates follow directly from the arrival of the highway.

Most properties along the road date from the historic period, which is why the street is held up as a good picture of Route 66 in its prime.

History of Urban Route 66, Williams

The road began as a dirt street through the center of town. It was later covered with cinders and eventually paved. The historic business district joined the National Register on December 20, 1984. On October 13, 1984, Interstate 40 took over from Route 66 here, but Williams has kept on welcoming tourists ever since.
