Signal is an extinct town near Rolla, MO, in the northern part of Phelps County. Its whole recorded life is short: a post office opened there in 1903 and closed in 1905. Nobody knows why the name Signal was chosen, which gives it a small mystery. The site is about 6 miles off Route 66, a back-road detour for travellers who enjoy lost places on the map.
What is Signal?
Signal is the site of a former settlement, not an attraction. The only firm facts are its location in Phelps County and its brief two-year post office, which hints at how small and short-lived the community was.
Visiting Signal: tips
Treat it as a drive through rural Ozark country. Stay on public roads and respect private land. Macedonia, another vanished town, is about 2.5 miles away; Westcott and the National Bank of Rolla Building are each about 6 miles.
