Macedonia is an extinct town near Rolla, MO, in the northern part of Phelps County. It lay a short way east of Highway 63, on the older alignment of that road, about 4.5 miles north of downtown Rolla. The town is gone, but the Macedonia Church and its cemetery stand about a mile to the north. The site is about 3 miles off Route 66, a short detour from the Rolla stops.
What is Macedonia?
Macedonia is a former settlement rather than a place with buildings to tour. Its name lives on through the church and cemetery just north of the old town site, which give the area a quiet, rural feel.
The town grew up beside the old version of Highway 63, a road that runs north out of Rolla. Today that old line survives as a side road just off the main highway.
Visiting Macedonia: tips
Head north from Rolla on Highway 63 and look for the older road just to the east. Allow a short stop; there is little to see beyond the setting, the church and the cemetery. Treat the cemetery with respect and stay on public ground.
The site pairs well with Signal, another lost town about 2.5 miles away. Back in Rolla, the National Bank of Rolla Building is about 5 miles off, and the Rolla Ranger Station Historic District is under 6 miles.
