- On Route 66
The Bent Door is a 1947 roadside building on the old road through Adrian, TX, the town that calls itself the midpoint of Route 66, about a third of a mile from the Midpoint Café. The café closed in 1972, a later restoration was never finished, and in 2026 a travel site and a visitor's blog describe it as defunct and run-down. It is a photo stop from the roadside, not a place to eat.
What is Bent Door Café?
Robert Harris rebuilt a small earlier structure with the top of a surplus control tower from the Army air base at Dalhart, and one window opening became a door cut to the slant of the tower's windows, which gave the place its name. It ran as a café, souvenir shop and gas station before I-40 bypassed Adrian; Harris bought it back in 1995, but it never reopened.
Visiting Bent Door Café: tips
Look from the roadside at the slanted door, the tower windows and an old gas pump out front. The Midpoint Café is a short walk west.
