Magnolia Station

Magnolia Station in Vega, TX, is a restored gas station that Colonel J.T. Owen built in 1924 on the Ozark Trail, two years before the road became Route 66. Over the years it carried Magnolia, Phillips 66 and Conoco signs and later served as a barbershop. The city restored it with a National Park Service grant in 2001, and it now welcomes travelers as a visitor center.

What is Magnolia Station?

A small gas station in the Texas Panhandle town of Vega, restored to look as it did on the highway; the attendant once lived upstairs. Do not confuse it with Magnolia stations in other towns, such as the Magnolia Service Station in Texola, Oklahoma, which has its own page on this site.

History of Magnolia Station

Built in 1924, the station carried Magnolia, Phillips 66 and Conoco signs, then served as a barbershop. After Interstate 40 bypassed Vega it stood empty for nearly 30 years. In 2001 the city won a National Park Service Route 66 grant and restored it. Local people call it the second gas station built on Route 66, which is a local claim.

Visiting Magnolia Station: tips

Volunteers staff it as a visitor center on a weekday schedule, and no hours are posted online, so treat a visit as a bonus. Vega is about 34 miles west of Amarillo, and the Milburn-Price Culture Museum is a few blocks away.
