The Boston Store in Chandler, OK, is a two-story commercial building raised in 1900 from rusticated sandstone, stone left rough on its face. Over the decades it has held a remarkable string of businesses, from a jeweler and a tailor to a billiards room, a drugstore and a restaurant. Listed on the National Register since 1984, it sits about a mile and a half off the old road in Chandler's historic downtown.
What is Boston Store?
The Boston Store is a sturdy stone building, two stories tall, with walls of rusticated sandstone. That rough, textured stonework gives it a solid, handmade look that stands out from brick storefronts.
Its real story is the list of tenants. Across its long life, the building has been home to a jewelry business, an insurance brokerage, a tailor shop, a place to shoot billiards and a drugstore, and later it served meals as a restaurant. Few buildings show so clearly how one address can change with the needs of a small town. It joined the National Register on April 5, 1984.
Visiting Boston Store: tips
The building is less than a mile off the old road. Its current use is not known, so view it from the sidewalk.
The Clapp-Cunningham Building is about 0.1 miles away, and the Mascho Building and Public Privy and the Chandler Bookstore are each about 0.2 miles off. Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk the group of historic storefronts.
