The Chandler Bookstore in Chandler, OK, began life in 1903 as a dry goods store built by A. E. Mascho in the Late Victorian style. Later it became a bookstore, run by Bill, one of Mascho's descendants, so the family link to the building carried on. On the National Register since 1984, it stands right beside the Mascho Building, about a mile and a half off the old road.
What is Chandler Bookstore?
This is a Late Victorian commercial building, the ornamented storefront style popular at the turn of the last century. A. E. Mascho put it up in 1903 to sell dry goods, the cloth, clothing and household basics a small town relied on.
The building's second life came as a bookstore; Bill, a descendant of Mascho, ran it. That long family link makes it a small but real piece of local continuity. The Mascho Building, which the same man owned, is right next door, so the two tell one family's story side by side. National Register listing came on April 5, 1984.
