Brannen-Devine House

The Brannen-Devine House is a brick Queen Anne cottage in Flagstaff, AZ, on East Cottage Avenue, about 0.2 miles off the old road. It was built in 1892 as the home of pioneer J.M. Brannen and later housed Thomas Devine, an engineer for a big timber company. Listed on the National Register in 1986, it is a tidy example of the simple house style that was popular in early Flagstaff.

What is Brannen-Devine House?

The house is a modest brick building, about 30 by 40 feet, resting on a stone foundation. Its style is a plain, local take on Queen Anne, sometimes called a Queen Anne Cottage. The National Register nomination praised it as a good representative of that form, which was popular in town at the time.

The house also helped anchor the Brannen Addition, a neighborhood laid out in 1884. A merchant named P.J. Brannen is credited as the first to move his business from Flagstaff's original Old Town to the newer part of town that grew up here.

History of Brannen-Devine House

J.M. Brannen, one of Flagstaff's pioneers, had the house built in 1892. From 1903 to 1908 it was the home of Thomas Devine, an engineer with Arizona Lumber and Timber Co., which ties it to the timber industry that shaped the town. The house was added to the National Register in 1986. In 2021 it was being offered as a short-term rental.
