Railroad Addition Historic District

The Railroad Addition Historic District covers the heart of downtown Flagstaff, AZ, right on Route 66. Its brick and stone buildings are tied to both the Santa Fe railway and the old highway, and to some of the town's best-known early businessmen. Historic hotels and cafes sit within a few steps of each other, which makes this an easy place to park once and explore on foot.

What is Railroad Addition Historic District?

The district was first drawn around the Santa Fe tracks, Agassiz and Beaver Streets, and Birch and Aspen Avenues. It has been enlarged twice, adding nine buildings along Phoenix Avenue between Beaver Street and San Francisco Avenue, plus one more on East Route 66.

Most of what you see is solid masonry, and there is a reason for that. After destructive fires swept through early Flagstaff, the city ruled in 1897 that every building in the business area had to be made of brick, stone or iron.

History of Railroad Addition Historic District

Several buildings here are linked to leading merchants from around the turn of the twentieth century. John W. Weatherford built the hotel that carries his name. Four Babbitt brothers, Charles, David, George and William, are linked to several buildings, and Thomas E. Pollock Sr. is another name tied to the district.

Visiting Railroad Addition Historic District: tips

The district sits right on Route 66, so there is no detour. Park once and walk: Hotel Monte Vista is inside the district, and the Weatherford Hotel and The Ice House are about a tenth of a mile away. Allow an hour.
