The Ice House

The Ice House is a stone commercial building in Flagstaff, AZ, on East Birch Avenue, just a tenth of a mile from Route 66. Sometimes called Babbitt's Ice Plant, it went up in 1946 and joined the National Register in 2009. It is a newer landmark than many downtown buildings, and a good example of how Flagstaff kept building in stone well into the Route 66 era.

What is The Ice House?

The building is a sturdy stone structure built for commercial use. Its other name, Babbitt's Ice Plant, points to its original job of making ice. It stands at 201 East Birch Avenue, a short walk from the railroad and the old highway through downtown.

Its National Register listing in 2009 recognized the building as a historic commercial property. It shows that the downtown habit of building in solid masonry carried on well after the war years.

Visiting The Ice House: tips

The Ice House is only about a tenth of a mile off Route 66, so it is easy to reach on foot from downtown. The site is listed as wheelchair accessible. Treat it as a quick look on a walking loop: Hotel Monte Vista, the Railroad Addition Historic District and the Presbyterian Church Parsonage are each about a tenth of a mile away, and food is close by.
