Mount Elden is an extinct lava dome just northeast of Flagstaff, AZ, about a mile off the old road. It climbs nearly 2,400 feet above town to a summit of 9,301 feet, and its rocky slopes can be seen from almost anywhere in Flagstaff. Forest roads and trails in the Coconino National Forest make it easy to explore on foot.
What is Mount Elden?
The mountain is one of about 600 volcanoes in the San Francisco volcanic field and covers nearly 15 square miles. It is dormant, and an eruption is considered extremely unlikely. It is named for John Elden, an early Anglo settler who homesteaded on the mountain and ran sheep on the grasslands below in the late 1800s. In 1977 the human-caused Radio Fire burned 4,600 acres on its south and southeast sides.
Visiting Mount Elden: tips
Reach the trails through the Coconino National Forest; bring water and pace yourself at this altitude. Elden Pueblo, at the mountain's foot, is about 1.6 miles away.
