Sayre Champlin Service Station, Oklahoma

A 1934 Streamline Moderne design, the Sayre Champlin Service Station stands on an old Route 66 alignment in Sayre, OK, less than a mile from the main route line. Built for the Champlin Refining Company, it sold fuel and repairs to highway travelers until the interstate drew traffic away. It closed in 1967 and is now on the National Register, a sleek bit of 1930s design steps from downtown Sayre.

What is Sayre Champlin Service Station?

The main building shows off the Streamline Moderne style, the smooth, speed-inspired look of the 1930s. Look for rounded oval pilasters, bands that run horizontally across the front, big plate-glass windows alongside multi-pane ones, and a paint scheme that plays light and dark colors against each other.

The station offered both gasoline and car repairs, the full package a long-distance motorist might need.

History of Sayre Champlin Service Station

The station opened in 1934 as a Champlin affiliate, taking the place of an older station that was already there before Route 66 came through. Business depended on the highway in more ways than one: the big tanker trucks that kept its pumps full added to the traffic on the road.

When Interstate 40 bypassed Route 66 here in 1958, trade dropped off, and the station shut for good in 1967. It was listed on the National Register on March 3, 2004.
