Times Beach, near St. Louis, MO, is a ghost town less than a mile off the old road and 2 miles east of Eureka. Founded in 1925, it was home to over two thousand people, and Route 66 ran along its southern edge. In early 1983 everyone was moved out because the ground was poisoned with dioxin. Today the site is a state park that tells the story of the town and the highway.
What is Times Beach?
Missouri formally dissolved the city in 1985, and the land became a 419-acre state park that opened in 1999, honoring both Route 66 and the local history. In 2001 federal regulators took the site off their Superfund cleanup list.
