Avery, Missouri

Avery is a vanished town in Leasburg, MO, about 4 miles off the old road in eastern Crawford County. Its townsite sits above Avery Hollow, about 2 miles from Onondaga Cave State Park on its western side, with Missouri Route MM running alongside. A post office served the community from 1853 to 1865. For Route 66 travellers, it is a quiet glimpse of the rural settlements that came before the highway.

What is Avery?

Little remains on record beyond the site itself and the Avery cemetery, which sits between the hollow and Route MM. The town's name most likely came from nearby Avery Valley, named for a local family.

Visiting Avery: tips

This is best combined with a trip to Onondaga Cave State Park, about 2.9 miles away. Treat the cemetery with respect. The Wagon Wheel Motel, Café and Station is about 6.2 miles off.
