Route 66 in Seligman, Arizona
Seligman is a small railroad town in northern Arizona, about 1,977 miles from Chicago along the old road, and the place where the campaign to save Route 66 began. When Interstate 40 opened around it on September 22, 1978, traffic nearly vanished. In 1987 local barber Angel Delgadillo helped found the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona, the first of the state associations, which is why the town calls itself the Birthplace of Historic Route 66. Our Seligman page tells the story.

The main street is the stop, and it is short enough to walk. The Seligman Commercial Historic District covers a few blocks of it. Angel and Vilma Delgadillo's gift shop opened in 1950, and his brother Juan's Snow Cap Drive-In, built in 1953 mostly from scrap lumber, is still run by the family and still plays jokes on its customers. Nearby, the Copper Cart sign marks a 1952 diner that now sells souvenirs, the Rusty Bolt has costumed mannequins on its roof, and the early-1900s Pioneer Hall building, long the Sundries curio shop, now houses a hot-dog restaurant.
To stay the night, the Historic Route 66 Motel opened in 1950 as the Navajo Motel, and the Cottage Hotel is also in town. From the east, leave I-40 at Exit 139 and drive about 17 miles of old Route 66 into Seligman. West of town begins the longest unbroken stretch of the old road, about 160 miles toward Kingman and the Colorado River, with Grand Canyon Caverns on the way.
