Kingman's list is unusual: most of our stops here are historic houses and commercial buildings, many of them put on the National Register after a survey in the 1980s. Walk a few blocks off the old road and you pass Queen Anne houses from the 1890s, Craftsman bungalows and native-stone homes like the 1927 Max J. Anderson House, one of only six such stone houses in town. Some carry small stories: the O. E. Walker House, a stone bungalow from around 1916, became Kingman's first hospital, and the Tyrell House, an 1897 painter's cottage, is remembered as the first house in town with indoor plumbing.
For the town's story, start at the Mohave Museum of History and Arts, run by the county historical society, and the Bonelli House, a 1915 house turned museum on a downtown corner. The Kingman Commercial Historic District keeps two blocks of old hotels, a railroad depot and early storefronts along the old road. East of town, the slim Peacock Mountains line the road toward Hackberry.
Practical note: Kingman is a main overnight town on our planner and the last big town before the drive over Sitgreaves Pass to Oatman, about 27 miles away, and the Mojave Desert beyond. Fill up, and carry water in summer.
