The Powerhouse stands on Andy Devine Avenue, Kingman's stretch of Route 66, in a steam-powered electric plant built in 1907 and 1908. It stopped making power in 1938, sat empty for decades and reopened in 1997 as the town's visitor center. A Route 66 museum followed in 2001, and the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the natural first stop in Kingman.

What it is

The visitor center and the Arizona Route 66 Museum share this one historic building. The museum follows the story of the road from Native trade routes and army surveys through settlers, Dust Bowl migrants and the main-street culture of the 1950s, using murals, photographs and life-size scenes. The building also holds the Route 66 association's gift shop and an electric vehicle museum.

A bit of history

The plant began supplying Kingman and nearby mines with electricity in 1909 and stopped when power from Hoover Dam took over in 1938. Local volunteers campaigned from 1984 to save the building, and it joined the National Register in 1986. The city of Kingman owns it today.

Visiting tips

The Powerhouse sits right on the old road in downtown Kingman, so there is no detour. An hour is enough for the museum. Check the visitor center's hours before you go, since sources do not agree on them.
