Vilander, Missouri

Vilander is a vanished town in Bourbon, MO, about 5.5 miles off the old road in eastern Crawford County. Its site sits beside Brazil Creek, on the southern bank, a couple of miles upstream from where the creek flows into the Meramec River. A post office operated here from 1885 to 1920. For Route 66 travellers, it is a small story from the Missouri back country rather than a place with much to see.

What is Vilander?

The name has a personal story. An early postmaster, a woman, borrowed her husband's middle name; he was Calvin Vilander Lynch. Federal mapping records still list Vilander as a populated place. Anthonies Mill lies about 2.5 miles further up the creek in Washington County.
