Sunset, Arizona

Sunset is a former Mormon town site near Winslow, AZ, about four miles northwest of town and about 2 miles off the old road. Settlers led by Lot Smith arrived in 1876, but drought and flash floods ruined their dams and crops. The town was gone by 1884, and the last families left in 1888. The Little Colorado River now flows over the old town site, and only a small cemetery on a hill remains.

What is Sunset?

Almost nothing of the town survives because the river channel moved across it. The one remaining piece is Sunset Cemetery, a small burial ground on a hilltop that now belongs to Homolovi State Park. Obed, Brigham City and Joseph City were its three sister colonies.

Visiting Sunset: tips

Visit the cemetery as part of a trip to Homolovi State Park, about 1.9 miles away; restrooms are about 0.2 miles off. Treat the graves with respect. The Brigham City site is about 1.8 miles away.
