The Armour and Jacobson Building is a 1921 commercial building in downtown Kingman, AZ, about a tenth of a mile off the old road. It was designed in the Chicago School style, a straightforward commercial look that grew out of early skyscraper design. The building joined the National Register after a 1985 survey of Kingman's historic places, and it stands right next to two other listed buildings, making it an easy part of a downtown walk.
What is Armour and Jacobson Building?
This is a working commercial block, not a museum. The Chicago School style it follows favors clean lines and generous windows over ornament, which suited shops and offices in a growing town. The building dates from 1921, and together with its listed neighbors it gives a good picture of Kingman's downtown in the early 1920s.
Its name joins two surnames, Armour and Jacobson, though the record does not say more about who they were.
Visiting Armour and Jacobson Building: tips
View it from the sidewalk; it is a quick stop of a few minutes. The W. A. Gruninger Building and the Van Marter Building stand right beside it, and the Kingman Commercial Historic District is about a tenth of a mile away, with old hotels and a railroad depot. Together they make a relaxed walk of an hour or less in the middle of town.
