United States Post Office

The old United States Post Office in Kingman, AZ, is a 1935 federal building in the downtown district along the old road. Designed under supervising architect Louis A. Simon, it was the first building made specifically to house Kingman's mail; earlier post offices operated out of stores. Now owned by the city and used as offices, it is a handsome stop on a Route 66 walk through Kingman's historic center.

What is United States Post Office?

The building follows a Period Revival design with Italian touches. Louis A. Simon served as supervising architect and Neal A. Melick as supervising engineer.

Its setting helps tell the downtown story: the Little Red School stands across the street, and the old Elks Lodge is just around the corner.

History of United States Post Office

Kingman got this post office in 1935. Before then, mail was handled inside local stores, so the new building marked a step up for the town. The City of Kingman later took it over for office space. A 1985 survey of 63 historic Kingman resources led to its National Register listing in 1986.

Visiting United States Post Office: tips

The building is right in the downtown area the old road runs through. Since it is used for city offices, enjoy the architecture from the sidewalk and allow about 10 minutes. The Max J. Anderson House and the Van Marter Building are right nearby, and the Bonelli House museum is about a tenth of a mile away.
