The Van Marter Building is a 1921 commercial building in downtown Kingman, AZ, just off the old road. Built in the Mission/Spanish Revival style, it was the business base of Van Marter Enterprises, which ran an unusual mix under one roof: a mortician's business, a shoemaker, headstone sales and rented offices. It has been on the National Register since 1986 and is a quick, curious stop on a Kingman walk.
What is Van Marter Building?
The building follows the Mission/Spanish Revival look common in the Southwest. J. B. Lammers, a contractor from Flagstaff, put it up in 1921. Inside were offices, a shoe shop and space for selling headstones, alongside the mortician's work, plus offices leased to other tenants.
Visiting Van Marter Building: tips
View it from the sidewalk; a few minutes is enough. The W. A. Gruninger Building, the Armour and Jacobson Building and the Max J. Anderson House are all right nearby, so pair them for a short downtown walk.
