McDougal Filling Station

The McDougal Filling Station is a small roadside station near Vinita, OK, built in 1941 along Route 66. Its wood frame hides behind an eye-catching stone veneer, a touch that set it apart from plainer stations. Added to the National Register in 2004, it is a late example of Route 66 roadside building from the years just before World War II. It sits about 3 miles off the main line of the old road.

What is McDougal Filling Station?

Underneath, the station is a wood-frame building, but its outer walls wear a stone veneer that gives it a sturdier and more distinctive look than plain siding would. That stone facing is the detail that earned it attention when it was studied for the National Register.

History of McDougal Filling Station

The station went up around 1941 on Route 66, when the highway was the main route across northeastern Oklahoma. It joined the National Register in 2004, more than six decades later.
